A BEACH SIDE NEST
ASBURY PARK NJ
2022
Perched high above the shoreline in one of Asbury Park’s most forward-looking residential towers, the Asbury Park Residence captures the spirit of the Jersey Shore’s ongoing renaissance. Floor-to-ceiling walls of glass wrap the apartment, framing sweeping views of the ocean and the town below as it continues to evolve into a vibrant cultural destination.
S T U D I O 8 Architect approached the project with a thoughtful, family-centric sensibility, designing a summer retreat that balances ease, elegance, and functionality. The interiors are deliberately light and airy, allowing the apartment to visually dissolve into the horizon beyond. A continuous, wraparound balcony blurs the line between indoors and out, encouraging a seamless flow that feels both expansive and effortless.
Furniture selections were kept intentionally light in color and visual weight, often lifted off the floor to enhance the sense of openness and flexibility. The result is a space that can effortlessly transition from a serene seaside escape to a lively setting for summer gatherings.
Natural light choreographs daily life within the home: sunrise washes the living spaces in soft morning light, while sunsets settle gently into the bedrooms, anchoring the residence in the rhythms of the coast.
This light-treading aesthetic philosophy carries through into the nursery and primary bedroom, where a similar palette of cream and black predominates. In both, lighting offers a sweet focal point by the bedside.
A wrap-around deck provides plenty of space for outdoor lounging and social overflow during group gatherings, with a selection of geometric rugs, sculptural planters, and teak furniture.
Durability was a watchword in this design. To temper the wear and tear of sand—and the couple’s newborn child—S T U D I O 8 Architect specified easy-to-clean surfaces and silhouettes, as well as performance fabric on upholstered pieces. While elevated in look, nothing in the home is too precious: It is designed to stand up to the clients’ actual lifestyle.
Avoiding any hint of “beach design” cliché, this coastal home supports life by the seaside without sacrificing style.
Texture enters the home through restrained, round details, like the caning on a bar cabinet and headboard, and the travertine striations of a coffee table. Defined by a graphic, linear pendant, glass-topped table, and low-profile seating that tucks away easily, the dining area is commanding without overwhelming the space.
