Modern Precision Within a Historic Envelope

The owners of a classic Park Slope brownstone sought a reimagining of their garden-level primary living area that would bring it into alignment with the character of the building’s upper floors. Stripped of its historic detail in an earlier renovation, the space called for convivial seating areas that could accommodate the growing family, a fresh kitchen with ample storage, a new bar and bathroom, and hardy finishes that could withstand the wear and tear of life with small children.

S T U D I O 8 Architect bridged the client’s yen for crisp, modern lines with period-accurate details. Tailored herringbone floors now run throughout, and the studio has reinstated molding and heritage style doors that coordinates with the house’s upper levels. A clean-lined custom kitchen has replaced the off-the-shelf Ikea cabinets that formerly occupied the space, bearing durable but elegant quartzite countertops. Positioned adjacent and surrounded by half-height wood panel detailing, a built-in breakfast nook holds presence in the room while maintaining sightlines from the kitchen—an arrangement that supports the family’s desire to live, cook, dine, and play in the same space.

The home harmonizes historic accents and modern finishes with technical know-how.

The final design not only creates a comfortable, functional area for the family to do all of those things, but also resolves some of the building’s trickier architectural elements. Studio8 Architect navigated a complex window condition through adaptation of millwork elements, prioritizing rhythm and harmony over matching for matching’s sake. And along the kitchen wall, Studio8 Architect reworked and extended a soffit to conceal air-conditioning systems, using its contours to establish a color-dividing datum.

The rooms have shed their austere white paint and basic finishes for warm wood tones and walls the color of the summer sky. Deep greens run through the powder room, where S T U D I O 8 Architect installed a compact wall-mounted stone sink, pendant-like mirror, lighting, and brass hardware. Here and in the kitchen, unlacquered brass finishes will age gracefully over time, earning patina through time and human touch.

EXISTING CONDITIONS

We are often tasked with rethinking how a space can function and feel. The final result is often far from where we started. Below are a few images of where we started and where we ended.

Custom millwork, fresh finishes, and updated fixtures completely transformed this formerly stark living space—bringing efficiency, function, and warmth.

Our Garden Level bathroom refresh was a big statement with minor effort. Fresh paint, a new sink, updated lighting, and thoughtfully chosen accessories completely transformed this compact space.

On the garden level—where the family gathers and daily life unfolds—the layout was thoughtfully reimagined to support a growing household. A custom banquette, seamlessly integrated into the millwork, tucks the dining table to the side, maximizing flow while keeping the heart of the home effortlessly connected.
